TED Talk Review: Hans Rosling

When audience members hear the word 'data' and 'statistics', they usually brace themselves for an college classroom, not a riveting TED Talk. The analytics of such data often is not met with waves of enthusiasm. So how is it that Hans Rosling's TED Talk on 'The Best Stats You've Ever Seen' is listed as one of the must-see TED Talks? Rosling is a key example of the fact that presentation really is key.

TED Talks boasts on Rosling, sharing that, "In Hans Rosling’s hands, data sings. Global trends in health and economics come to vivid life. And the big picture of global development—with some surprisingly good news—snaps into sharp focus." Rosling is a professor of global health at Sweden's Karolinska Institute (aka, he is used to presenting in a way that demands the attention of distracted 20-somethings). Not only is Rosling an esteemed academic, but an incredible visual presenter.

Throughout his TED Talk, Rosling bases each of his statements and slides on fact. He presents his data in a captivating way, utilizing infographics and animation, relying on crisp and clean visuals to educate his audience. Rosling speaks clearly and concisely, letting his slides speak for him, only adding commentary when he feels it enhances his point. He also relies on his sportscaster training to speak in both an informative and attention-grabbing manner. Additionally, Rosling ends his presentation by swallowing a sword; if the audience wasn't enchanted already, they certainly are now.

Conclusively, Rosling is a TED Talk great that is worthy of both our admiration and study. From his top-notch presentation to engaging speaking style, we all strive to channel our inner Rosling when presenting something both as, more, or less interesting than data.
